I work with individuals, couples, and families on a wide range of issues, including major life transitions such as change in employment, relationship, parenthood, health/illness, life-stage, and loss. Many of my clients struggle with anxiety and depression related to self-identity, spirituality, substance abuse, trauma, acute or chronic grief, and sexuality. My couples and family work is informed by my training at The Ackerman Institute for the Family; I am also certified in Prepare/Enrich, a relationship inventory and skill-building program often used in premarital counseling.

I am interested in all aspects of people's lives and have a special interest in the ways religion and spirituality intersect with our social and psychological selves.
Life is full of challenges. Some challenges bring out your best, as you rise to new heights, but others can feel insurmountable and leave you wondering where to go next. This can lead to all sorts of pain, frustration, sadness, anger, and resentment. The good news is that you do not have to struggle alone. I am a counseling psychologist, who practices psychodynamic psychotherapy and conducts psychological testing and assessments. Whether you are suffering from depression, anxiety, relationship issues, or just wonder if you could be getting more out of life, I can help.

My clients find these approaches invaluable in breaking down the barriers that keep them from connecting to their creativity, vitality, and spirituality.
I integrate traditional psychotherapy with my experience as a long-time student and teacher of Zen Buddhism. I guide my clients toward making a conscious shift from an attitude of 'working on' something to 'being with' something in a welcoming, nonjudgemental way. I help clients gain access to their inner resources in the face of strong emotions, by using breath awareness, guided imagery and meditation. I also practice Focusing-Oriented Psychotherapy, and EMDR. Focusing helps the client befriend their harsh self-judging mind by 'keeping it company' with compassion, interest and curiosity.

I also have an affinity for depth psychology and working with metaphor and spirituality as adjuncts to relational therapy.
As an individual, you may be experiencing a range of symptoms in body and mind that affect your ability to function optimally, to rise, and become your fullest you. In individual therapy, you’ll discover that these symptoms conceal aspects of yourself that yearn to be seen and known by the rest of you. In accessing these buried parts of self, you’ll find that your symptoms become openings through which powerful transformations occur. As a couple, you may find yourselves trapped in repetitive, painful interactions. In couples therapy, you'll begin to transform these interactions into a safe dialogue where all feel seen and known.

I integrate elements from forest therapy, eco-feminist spirituality and shamanic traditions into the work, especially when there is eco-grief about the climate crisis.
In my own healing work which led me down the paths of many different schools of thought (therapeutic and spiritual), I came to believe that the healing process consists of three basic components: understanding yourself better, releasing old grief of many accumulated losses, and learning to allow the flow of emotions to come and go, rather than to suppress them. Talk therapy provides the foundation to gain clarity and calm, as the hurt mind is often confused and overwhelmed. Guided meditations bring about deep release, and help us tap into the energy of the heart that is loving and generous.

My eclectic therapeutic approach draws from my background as a social worker as well as my training in relational psychoanalysis, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and family/marital therapy. While thinking about the person and their environment I focus on the present and revisit the past in order to better understand how it affects one’s current life. I take into account the individual sitting in front of me and how he or she can best benefit from therapy. The therapeutic relationship is of utmost importance in order for therapy to be effective. Clients should feel safe and comfortable opening up to their therapist.

“Everything can be taken from us but one thing, the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way” — Viktor Frankl. It is my firm belief that we free ourselves to think and act in new ways when we are willing to embrace the exploration of the self and develop insights into the motivations behind our behavior. We will work together to build a shared understanding of the obstacles that you are facing, whether that means improving your interpersonal relationships, exploring your identity/sexuality/spirituality, strengthening your self esteem, finding motivation and success in your career, navigating overwhelming and traumatic experiences, or identifying maladaptive patterns that may be acting as barriers to the life you want. I offer both short and long term psychotherapy to adolescents and adults seeking assistance with anxiety, mood disorders, mood dysregulation, obsessive thinking, compulsive behavior, ADHD, substance abuse, anger, impulsivity, highly sensitive temperament, and psychoeducation related to psychiatric medication management.
